It wasnt, slavery made this country the richest in the world. But after time passed, the industries in the North were different from the industries in the south. When slavery no longer was as effective monitarily in the north, they started not liking that the south was getting free labor, which they saw as unfair. A modern economy works in different ways, and the north had a more modern economy than the south. Using slaves was no longer a way to stimulate production and revenue. But in the south, which wasnt focused on manufacturing like the north, free labor worked great for the things it was used in, tedious farming. That is until Eli Whitney invented the cotton gin.
