Well, some of you are right and the others are wrong !!! A weldor is the person who physically performs the welding fuction with his hands and a welder is the welding machine that provides the electrical current to weld the metal together. Unless you re in the welding profession you would not know this answer ! This term has been around since 1875 and is in the dictionary. I am a Pipeline weldor in United Association of Pipefitters Local # 798. It is the only local with has true pipeline welding rig hands. By the way a "RIG HAND" is a weldor who has his own truck, welding machine and tools to weld pipeline accross the country ! A "single hand" is a weldor who shows up with a welding hood and a pair of gloves and the contractor supplies the welding machine and all of the consumables. I hope this answer was specific enough for someone to understand..........

I am a retired Master Weldor. And there is another argument, Master Weldor. When I was an apprentice, 40 years ago. I looked it up, and the dictionary I used said, Welder had 2 definitions. 1: a machine used for welding. 2: a man whose job is welding. and then there is Weldor: A man who is SKILLED at welding. That is why I call myself a WELDOR. As far as Master Weldor, technically, there is no certification for that. It is a matter of knowledge, skill and acknowledgment by your peers.

According to 'Dictionary.com' , both "welder" & "weldor" are the noun related to the verb "to weld". "Welder" is the most common form. I have never seen it spelled "weldor" before, but, it is in the dictionary!
