Hi...You need not to replace all the four tyres but is better to replace two tyres at a time(Front if your car is Front wheel drive...Rear ones if your car is a rear wheel drive)...the purpose of replacing two tyre at a time is for stability/Braking reasons.

The fifth wheel(Spare one)...you can plant flowers in it if you do not want to through it away..:))..Take the one which is 40%worn out, make it become the spare tyre. Then remember after changing tyres, do not forget to perform wheel alignment on front and rear "train"....

Replacing all the five tyres would be the best option. In case you can't afford right now replace front two tyres because the maximum load is in the front (due to the Engine).
Bottomline :- NEVER replace a single tyre, always replace in pairs. Also rotate the tyres periodically (schedule it on a time basis or on mileage basis) so that they wear out uniformly & hence prove economical in the long run.

Ideally you should replace all tires. That not withstanding:

If you have a front wheel drive car (most newer cars are this) the minimum would be to replace the front two tires.

If you have a rear wheel drive car then replace the rear tires.

If you have an all wheel drive car all four tires must be replaced simultaneously.

If you want to replace just one, then replace the spare.

If only one tyre has been torn out that means your car requires wheal balancing and alignment.Go for it before replacing the tyre.

It is better to replace all four tyres simultaniously to better your mileagea and to save your engine from heating up.

If your going to change a tire on a vehicles it is better to change two at a time. so you not mess up the balance to much. but if you have the money to replace all your tires at one time that is the best and some times you can get a free alignment out of it also.

Oh, truthfully replace all 4 and purely shop that 2 12 months old tire for the spare, in case spare will ever be prefer in replace. yet undergo in techniques, the shakes simply by choppy tread varieties and tire existence will reason You soo lots hassle and rigidity which you would be able to prefer to alter it in any case. maximum severely, different tread kind will reason a unfavourable undertaking, simply by fact in serious circumstances,it may react in yet differently(one tire would be pushing You forward mutually as the different would be slowing You down, appropriate for the crash undertaking!) despite You do,be sure you stability them properly and don't be driving like Schumacher :)

Tires should be replaced in pairs. If you have only 40% left on one tire, then it should be replaced too. By your question, I surmise that you should replace all Five tires.

If you can only afford one, buy one. If you have the resources to replace all of them, it helps to conserve gas and spread the wear out more evenly, it improves the gas mileage of the vehicle if they are evenly worn.

It depends on where it is going. If it is an AWD vehicle (not just 4x4 but AWD) then you must relpace them all. If your car is front wheel drive and it is one of the front tires, reaplace both of them. If I were you, I would replace them all anyways. Buy road hazard and lifetime rotation/balancing.
