I am having trouble fingering an A chord on an acoutic guitar. I know the placement of fingers on the frets, but since three fingers are on the second fret they barely fit. Is there a trick to getting all three fingers to fit on one fret or do I just have to practice practice practice!!!

Practice makes perfect. My teacher makes it all look so simple, but whenever I try it's just clumsy, but perseverance and practice will get me there. You too.

You've got to fit all three of your fingers on the second fret, and it can feel a little crowded at first. Start by placing your first finger on the second fret of the fourth string. Next, put your second finger on the second fret on the third string. Lastly, place your third finger on the second fret of the second string. Strum the bottom five strings (being careful to avoid the sixth), and you'll be playing an Amajor chord.

Another common way to play an Amajor chord is by flattening one finger across the second fret of all three strings. This can be tricky, and initially, will be extremely difficult to play cleanly.

Bar the bottom four strings with your index finger at the second fret, and press the bottom E string down behind the third fret. I have larger fingers so I can fret the three strings you a refering to with my index finger on the forth string and cover the other two strings with me center finger. The A7 cord I refered to will surfice though.

OK I use only two fingers to form the same chord. The second, third and fourth strings on the second fret. I use my second and third fingers BETWEEN the strings will hold all three down nicely.

second finger between strings 3 and 4 holding them both AND third [ring] finger between second and third strings holding them both down.

place the pad of your second to little finger over all three strings. Use your little finger on the back of this finger to push harder. This will also help you later with bar chords.

I play it with my pointer, middle and ring finger just all in a row, but I've seen people play it with their middle, ring and pinky in a row. I've also seen people play it with their middle on top, pointer in the middle and pinky on bottom. Try each and see which one you feel most comfortable with.
