Because it is a transit system in which you are seen as an individual. Planes and trains on the other hand, tend to accomadate more unaffiliated persons. Thus you are jumping "on the bandwagon" so to speak. Also, maybe it is looked at differently because when flying on a plane or riding on a train, you dont have any control of the direction of the vehicle. It is controlled by a pilot or guided by a track. In a car, however, there is more of a feeling of being in control, and you are surrounding yourself with the car and guiding it around. I have many times gotten "in" to a single engine cessna, just me and my uncle, which didnt feel weird. He said, "get in the plane" I guess its because of the size of it. Both commercial airliners and trains are large, and it makes us feel different.

You are right...it's not like we get on top of the plane or on top of the train.
I should start climbing my car to get on top from now on.
Which higher authority do we go to to change this?
