good point, especially now that giant windmills can be placed 20 miles off shore, surely they are no eyesore there

Because they're idiots.
We've had about 15 put up near where I live at the moment and all people can say is (sarcastically) "Well that improves the sky line doesn't it." People are shallow and stupid. Would they have attempted to stop power lines and telephone cables going up so as to preserve the landscape? Global warming is a serious issue and wind turbines are a serious way of tackling the problem. Happen to think they improve the landscape in a lot of ways anyway.

A few years ago I was working in Denmark. I was taken to a number of villages and each had 2 wind turbines nearby.
They looked ok, the noise was minimal and importantly they supplied electricity for the whole village for 80% of the time.
In times of low usage the turbines automatically fed the electricity generated into the national grid. The village was credited with the amount. In times of high usage the village took from the grid. Overall the electricity cost the village nothing. The only charges were for the upkeep of the turbines.
Surely a worthwhile way to go.

First, the question of 'global warming' is still being debated.
Second, wind power is only efficacious in certain small areas.
Third, Wind turbines create aural disturbances.
Forth, a wind farm is not very aesthetic.
Fifth, there are more efficient alternate solutions available.
Sixth, They don't solve all the issues of mankind's contribution to the 'Global Warming' situation
Personally, I would have one for home power if I lived in a good area.

For the same reason there is still resistance to the widespread use of other alternative, renewable sources of energy like solar, hydroelectric, geothermal, and the like.
The topography of industries as we know it will change even the way we live. No more oil companies, no more gas or diesel powered vehicles...countries wield vast economic and political might on the world stage on the basis of who holds the most "energy cards" these days. Look at the roster: the Middle East countries, Russia, Venezuela...
A world no longer reliant on oil and its by products to fuel its economies will be playing on a more level field, I believe. Prices of basic goods shall no longer soar when someone in the Middle East decides to raise the price or a terror cell there kidnaps military personnel from a neighboring country.
Have you seen the movie, "So where did the electric car go?" Was it finally released?
Simple to the core is this one word explanation: greed.
Thanks for asking... I hope many more think the way you do.

I know! There are fuddy duddies about who have nothing to do whilst there husband is away in the city in business so set up little lobbying groups against wind turbines in their village. They complain about the noise (not that bad, and better than living under a flight path), and the eyesore (they really aren't ugly, are they?) I might post a question asking that!

Because they are not the answer. They are ugly, take up land, and need specific locations to be be remotely efficient, so even if the government rode roughshod over all landowner rights and built them in every suitable location, they would not meet our energy needs.
The reason Bliar has suddenly gone nuclear is that just for once, the government has done the maths! It's the only option. If you don't like it, the alternative is to reduce our energy consumption to a level that could be met by green energy. And that would require so much sacrifice, folk just ain't going to do it.

Every newly built house should have a wind turbine as standard.
The savings on power bills will make the rest of us jealous so we'll all want one too.

i do no longer remember international warming being a controversy in the 1880s, yet I do remember that for the time of the Seventies, scientists have been predicting doom from international cooling. between 1940 and 1970, there replaced right into a measurable help in the earth's familiar temperature. of course, the reason for this international cooling replaced into concept to be guy polluting the ambience with aerosols and CO2. curiously, in the 70s the toxins in the ambience brought about the solar's warmth to be deflected so as that the Earth could no longer be warmed and a clean ice age replaced into being predicted.

I would definitely have a personal one if I was living in the country and it was suitable to erect one. I hate to go down the nuclear road I had though we were getting away from that direction but the government thinks otherwise.
I used to live in Wales where we had quite a lot they were not noisy and I found they looked very restful to watch slowly turning, it reminded me of when I was in my pram and my mum used to fix a plastic one to the pram handle.
The climate is change and our weather patterns are getting more extreme. and although they say its warming up we could find that with the Arctic ice melting it will turn the Gulf stream very cold which will effect us quite badly.
Now is the time to act.

People feel that their ugly and not good enough for the 'little' energy that they produce compared to more, un- environmental methods ie coal.
Ideally we need to work towards re useable sources, wind, hydro, solar etc...and to phase out coal as an example, Nuclear has its protesters too, is efficient, and wont run out too soon, and however when nuclear disasters happen, people tent to notice as they have huge impact on everything around it.
