Mostly it hearkens back to the time when the news casterd HAD to read from their notes. The pages have become so much a part of the LOOK of a newcaster that they have kept them, even when they don't need them. Plus, there are times when the receive information that they didn't ahve time to get into the teleprompter so they HAVE to use the written notes.

That is their news that is so late breaking it is not available on the teleprompter: "This just in, late breaking news, and we are interrupting the report on the war with a local story. A kitten has gotten stuck up a historic tree on the city common. The fire department is on the way and our reporter on the scene will keep you informed on the rescue progress."

So they can look informed and on the top of things. Plus they can have notes written on them. I hate much more when they go to commercial or the show is ending, and the newscasters try to act like they have something to talk about, and they smile or laugh. It is so fake.
