I am an African American, and though I don't know the spirit in which you asked the question, I do want to respond because it's an issue that I too have a heavy heart about-not just those who are wealthy, but all African Americans should be doing much more than we are to assist the motherland of Africa.

Now, are there wealthy who give-without a doubt. There are many examples that we can point to (Oprah, Magic Johnson, etc.) and many more we cannot point to because they have chosen to make their contributions secret. You appear to be alluding to the fact that not everything that can be done is being done there-and I have to agree. I do not consider myself wealthy, but I have to admit that I could do more-I could contribute SOMETHING to an effort that will benefit the countries of Africa, and right now I am not. It is something that I hope to change soon.

Probably not much.
You see, the people
that need the money,
or the food and protection,
live on bedrolls on the ground
in the middle of sand and
dirty arid plains. There are
no postmen to deliver the
checks in the mail, or banks
to cash them if they did.
The country of Darfur is
an example of poverty in the
extreme. Did I mention that
the telephone ratio per capita
is like 1 : 5000. So, calling
someone who is a victim will
only get you a clerk in one
of the widely scattered towns.
The victims are scattered
all over the place with nothing.
They never heard of a Cell
Phone, PC, or a Hamburger.

Worse, for someone like you,
who posts questions like this
one, is the fact that the authorities
would resist your attempts to
provide assistance if you ever
gathered any for them. Darfur is
a disaster.

Not exactly wealthy, but a few friends and I set up a bake sale, car wash, and other activities at our church to collect money for the crisis in Darfur

as an "almost wealthy" black woman, I have access to hundreds of wealthy black people. I have informed them about the conditions in Darfur and other parts of Africa. They are sending their donations into:

www.savedarfur.org

I am a member of this coalition, as well as others. Please don't assume (as one of the other not so bright members of yahoo answers has) that we neglect our mother land. I have for years, sent money. Oprah has done various programs and sent large donations over seas (in Africa). Wealthy Black people send donations, but some do not feel the need to be recognized for something that everyone should do.
