It has something to do with how a banana blossoms and turns into a fruit. When you look inside a banana flower (its like a heart-looking red thing) you can see the pre-fruit stuff shaped like that. When they mature I think they retain the shape.

Because they huddle together in bunches to keep warm-- kind of like playing 'spoons' for humans. lol :)
