From west to east. As the Earth's rotation carries you to the east, things disappear over the horizon behind you, which is west. It is the same way it revolves around the Sun. Think of Earth as rolling along its orbit around the Sun and you will have the directions right.

Counter-clockwise viewed from "above" the north pole looking down: clockwise viewed from "below" the south pole looking up... there is a huge globe at DeLorme map store near Yarmouth, Maine where you can check this out... but you can also demostrate it with a small classroom globe... and as stated above, this motion translates into a West to East rotation.

As it sets in orbit in a relative position to the galaxy and the universe itself, I would say there is no N.S.E.W. And the navigational direction is known only to God and Captain/ Admiral Kurk.
