I would use the word, "smarmy," but I'm not so sure that's right. Early morning news anchors drive me nuts when they laugh at stupid dry jokes that aren't funny and you know that their laughing is not genuine. It just really ticks me off.

It's called "faking" or "acting". Why do people even say the stupid jokes to begin with? Then the other news people wouldn't have to laugh! Maybe it's some huge inside joke that only a few people actually get.

You could say its phony, unreal, feigned. I think I like feigned best. The dictionary says: " Feign: to make a show of, pretend, simulate, sham..."" So we have feigned laughter.

programmed or "canned" are terms used to describe laugh tracks and I think of their laughter in the same way

I was thinking "canned" laughter, but when it is just one person, maybe disingenuous would work?
