What exactly have we achieved? Are the people of Iraq better off today than 5 years ago?

It's utterly pointless.

The essential question is WHY we are there? We need to know the answer before we can decide if there is a point to the war.

First, there were WMD. Basically nothing was found except for degraded, unusable chemical weapons and a small amount of non weapons grade uranium already known to the pre war inspector. Done that.

Second explanation: we went to war in Iraq to defeat Saddam, a cruel dictator. Done that.

Third, we were told we were there to install a democratic form of government supported by a constitution. That's done.

Fourth, we were told we had to stay until there were enough Iraqi army trained. There are almost 300,000 trained now, that goal has been exceeded.

Fifth, we were told we were in Iraq to fight 'em over there, not here. It's now well documented that Iraq wasn't connected to the 9-11 massacres and that Al Qaeda was not in Iraq. No matter how many terrorists are killed there, can it be effective if we're not keeping them out of the US? Our borders are porous, airplane security is ineffective, and cargo coming into ports is rarely checked.

However, there may be a new "need" for us to stay -- to prevent the spread of the Islamic caliphate and/or the new Persian Empire. This is now a battle against good and evil, says our President. The US will need troops to defend Iraq from Iran and we will need to protect the border with Syria. The Iranians and the Syrians will both want to kill our troop once we start the planned aerial wars on Syria and Iran. So, looking at this as a neocon would, there is a great need to keep our troops in Iraq.

So the war is not pointless according to the Administration, US occupation of Iraq will still help us remake the Middle East.

Pointless

The war was pointless because:
1. Bush has lied for a case to engage into an illegal conflict over the premise of Saddam's acquiring WMD's, none of which was found,
2. Almost 3,000 of our soldiers died in this needless war and the ensuing Vietnamesque bloody, but brutal quagmire that evolved from it; the President has the dead soldiers' blood in his hands,
3. Diplomacy should have been used to avoid this pointless conflict; and
4. Our continued presence in Iraq has given rise to the insurgency responsible for many deaths of U.S. and Iraq forces, as well as Iraqi civilians! It has also raised the already high risk of terrorist threats here at home and worldwide!

Since you answered my question, I thought I would give you my opinion. I do think that this war is pointless. I have friends and family members that have been called to go there and it hurts to see them go into a war that shouldn't have started. Would it hurt anyone to sit and talk it out through peaceful delegations? No, I don't think it would.

I think it is pointless. The people there have been fighting for many years. What makes Bush think he has the magic touch?

Our soldiers are dying over there...let's not piss on that. They died believing in what they were doing. We definitely need an exit plan and begin to withdraw.
