It had some thing to do with Bikini Kill, Kurt was dating 1 of them called Tobi Vail or whatever the name is, then another member of the Bikini Kill, Kathleen or something, spray painted on the wall of Kurt's apartment "Kurt smells like teen spirit" refering to the deodorant Tobi used. Kurt thought it was a compliment or something and used it as the name of their most popular hit. As for the deodorant, Kurt didn't know about it untill the song was released.

Yeah, Kurt made that statement about a former girlfriend/riot grrl, Tracy something-or-other, I forget the name. It's actually a reference to the deodorant Teen Spirit, which smells like a stank mixture of soap and candy. The title itself has little to do with the song which has little to do with, well, anything!

Back when the song came out it had been the name of a deodorant for about a year or so. I always wondered if they were making fun of something involving the deodorant and the types of teens that would have been using it.

isnt that a deodorant? That **** stinks, my daughter thought that because it said teen spirit it was a good deodorant, but after smelling it we both realized it wasnt a good idea to purchase after all.
