If the carhop is bringing your meal to you - then he/she is providing a service that is subject to tipping.

Yes of course you tip the waitress who brings you food, unless she is rude or does a very very poor job. The only time I dont tip is when I go to the window and order the food and I go back and get it. Even then sometimes if the food is real good and I am in a good mood I will tip the cook. But you never ever tip the owner.

I do tip the sonic girls/guys that come bring my food only cause they are bringing out teh food in the heat or cold or rain whatever, i usually give them the rest of my change or a dollar depending on my mood and how much cash i have on me.
think this way, what is 60 cents to you? but to them if they get 30 cars giving them 60 cents each time they've made close to 20 bucks in tips!!! that would make my day cause they get minimum wage and thet sucks!!

More importantly, why have they started tipping themselves? I have been shortchanged 3 out of 4 times by the hop keeping a dollar for themself. I don't mind tipping but I'm not going to tip a dollar for my small coke. I always give a tip but I always count my change as well.

Not a bad question but you don't have to tip them. If you feel compelled to and they don't mind, go ahead. But it is not required by etiquette to tip a waiter or waitress at a fast food restaraunt, including Sonic.

Good question! My policy has been no tip for just one drink or cone or something, but if we ordered $10 worth of food or moreI give them a buck, but I've never really know what proper etiquette was either.

Hey since most of them are teenagers and they don't get paid very good - a little tip isn't going to hurt! It's just a quarter! Think of it as doing a good deed.

I don't think it is necessary to tip the servers at sonic. I've never done it before.

Ok, here we go again.....If someone is waiting on you, delivering something to you.....you should tip said person. They work for low wages and count on tips. I have never gotten mad at getting tipped. I have gotten mad at getting stiffed.

Everytime I go to Sonic and the waitress brings my food out, she kind of lingers there....I think she's trying to tell me something....

Of course you tip them, they are providing a service to you. It is just like a server inside a restaurant. These people depend on their tips to survive.
