Instructions are written for the computer using only words that are made up of simple switches, these swithes can have only two positions - they can be ON or OFF. The computer only knows these two simple positions of the electronic switch - much like you know the 26 letters of the alphabet. Either the bit is ON or it is OFF. For instance, the word 00101101 is simply several of these simple switches put together - and the computer can recognize this word and follow its instruction because of another program that's already built into the CPU, or Central Processing Unit (A large IC Chip often called the computer's "brain").

The programmer writes these instructions using words made up from many combinations of these switches, much like you might write a note using the letters of the alphebet.

A programmer can write a program (just a plan for the computer to follow) by using many of these bits and combining them into words and instructions for the computer to follow. He can also direct the computer to other programs or modules for even more instructions.

If there are several modules, the program will become very complicated - such as a game or even a basic operating system such as Windows.

It's important to remember that no matter how complicated it seems, a computer can only perform one line of instruction at a time (although it does this very, very fast) and it can only recognize one simple thing - whether a switch is ON or OFF.
