what about like a banana shapped object, that has 3 sides, but is drawn out.. is it real??? would you concider the round part on a cylender (the tube) to be a side though????????

Cylinder

It is definitely a geometric shape.

Yes the outside (round part) of the cylinder is considered one side. You can trace around the entire side without crossing an edge. Similarly, a solid sphere only has one side.

You can also look at this from a 2-D perspective. If you cut a cube apart (along the edges) you get six squares, one for each side, right? In addition, if you cut the cylinder part (along the edges) you get two circles and one rectangle (or two ellipses, or one square depending upon the exact structure) yielding three shapes for the three sides.

Furthermore, the banana shape would be real, and since all three sides would need to be curved to fit together three-dimensionally, why would the curved surface of the cylinder be a problem?

P.S. I am a chemical engineer. I tutored high school and university level mathematics, physics, and chemistry in college. You can trust that my answer is correct.

Shapes With 3 Sides

I am 100% percent sure that there are no 3 sided 3d shapes, as I also had the same curiosity once and did not manage to think up a possible shape with only 3 sides.
However there are 4 sided 3d shapes (with a triangle raising out of each side of another triangle that acts as base with their point coinciding at the highest point of the shape itself).

If you mean a closed figure that is created by 3 lines. No. A triangle is 2 dimensional figure. But if you could imagine bending a straight piece of wire in 2 places in different planes, you would have a model of a 3 sided 3 dimensional object.

I cannot think of one. The best I can come up with is a hollow 2d triangle (having 3 planes, and has heigth, depth, and width), however, it winds up having 6 faces (an internal and external left wall, an internal and external right wall, and an internal and external bottom wall).

Lol, a cylinder fits the bill. Cheers to the guy above me.

i dont know if there is one but u dfeinately cant call it a geometric shape under 2d section theres a whole branch under 3d geametry. Search for 3d geometry.
