4 children.........the only calculation that works out is 19 adults at $4 each = $76, therefore $76 from $80 is $4, and childrens tickets are $1 each....so the only answer would be 4 children.

There were 23 people at the performance....so 19 adults and 4 children add up to 23 people.

Hope that helps.

Let the number of children that attended the play be x.
Then, number of adults that attended the play = 23 - x.
Now, according to the question,
(x*1) + (23-x)*4 = 80
x + 92 - 4x = 80
92 - 3x = 80
12 = 3x
x = 4
Thus, 4 children attended the play.
