By itself, a single test of HCG levels reveals little because the range of normal values varies a lot. The problem is, once a pregnancy is confirmed, you need to know if it progressing along normally. Keeping track of HCG numbers is one way of measuring fetal viability. the key to interpreting the true value of HCG measurements is to look at their progression. In general, the HCG level will double every two to three days in early pregnancy. Approximately 85 percent of normal pregnancies will have the HCG level double every 72 hours. However, as you get further along in your pregnancy and the HCG levels get higher, the expected doubling time increases.
Expected levels for 'normal pregnancies':

* 0-1 week: 0-50 mIU/ml
* 1-2 weeks: 40-300 mIU/ml
* 3-4 weeks: 500-6,000 mIU/ml
* 1-2 months: 5,000-200,000 mIU/ml
* 2-3 months: 10,000-100,000 mIU/ml
* 2nd trimester: 3,000-50,000 mIU/ml
* 3rd trimester: 1,000-50,000 mIU/ml

Do not draw conclusions on either the viability of your fetus or the possibility of multiples, unless youhave a series of HCG tests done that clearly indicate a pattern.

The 157 is the amount of hormone present per milliliter of blood and if I am reading my own medical record right it looks like she would be about 4 to 5 weeks pregnant. Congratulations! These are the crucial times of the pregnancy. By the time your wife has her 12 week check up her hormone levels could be between 18,300 and 137,000. Best wishes to you both. Make sure your wife gets plenty of rest and if she feels anything isn't right go to the Dr. Good luck and enjoy this time it is an amazing experience. I have 2 beautiful girls to show for it. Medically the only thing the doctors can do for your wife before 12 weeks is have start prenatal vitamins and maybe iron pills so she doesn't get weak, the baby will take a lot out of her. Before 12 weeks the baby is developing embryo, everything is starting to form then. Just lots of rest and a good healthy diet and everything should run smoothly for her and the baby. Again Congratulations!

Generally whenever the HCG hormone is present you are pregnant, depending on when her last period was. The low level means she's probably not been pregnant very long.

You actually have full right to call up your doctors office and ask them what the test results mean. You pay them money for that service, if they dont provide it to you at the time of your visit then you need to ask them where you can find a professional doctor who can communicate with his patients. its your RIGHT.

IF this is how he is at this stage of her pregnancy, imagine what its going ot be like when he doesnt explain protential comlications and you're left in the dark thinking something is gravely wrong?

call the dr's office and find out what the results mean. And next time, dont leave that room, or allow the doctor to leave until you have full and clear understanding of everything he's telling you.

When an egg is fertilized, it takes a few days to implant in the uterus. Once it implants, it starts to create hCG. Ideally, the amount that it creates doubles every day.
So... if her first test was about 3, the next day, if tested, she should have been at about 6, then 12, 24, and so on. Going up is a good sign.

The doctor *might* have just meant that it's very early.

Best of Luck!

confident, that's achievable, in spite of if, lots of the fertility drugs do comprise HCG and could reason a "low point constructive" with out an somewhat being pregnant. a point of 40 six 2 weeks after ovulation is a sprint low, in spite of if, concept can ensue as much as 5 days after ovulation, so that's achievable that implantation passed off as overdue as Sept 20, so... perhaps? keep your palms crossed and want for the final.

Have no idea what he meant, but sounds like one to lose and find another doctor who will explain things to you properly.

There is no such thing as a minor pregnancy. She's either pregnant or not. He may have meant that the HCG levels were low, but that doesn't make a bit of difference. Again, either she is or she isn't and evidently she is, so be happy, peaceful and calm so the pregnancy can do it's best to continue.

Sounds good to me. The number should double daily for the first few weeks. If your wife is worried, she can take another blood test and see where the number is. If it's a lot higher, congrats!

That is really really low. It generally means that the pregnancy wont "stick" so to speak. She should be getting repeat tests to check the level. It should double every 48-72 hours. she might just be barely pregnant.
