Stems are rather thin, and the tiny pinkish flowers in spring don't last long. It's growing very fast.

If your description were more complete it would aid in ID. This sounds like a purpleleaf sand cherry (Prunus x cistena). Are the leaves about 1-1 1/4" long? Blooms for 1-2 weeks in spring? That could be it. You could Google it by clicking Images to be sure.

Also could be a great shrub called "nine bark", I forget the botanical name

could it be bear berry -- these have thorns and are deciduous, shed their leaves in fall
