Research and preparation. Research the company/organization you are interviewing with. Match your skills to what they do. They don't care what skills you have in the abstract, they want to know what the skills you have can do for them!

I think of it like this..

In a job interview, you want to get the employer, to imagine you doing the job. Try to give them a picture of you actually doing the work.

When someone advertises a job, they've got a problem. (Which of course is not enough staff, to keep them making money) So I think about the job, the company, and what their problem is, eg. they don't have anyone that can type letters and answer the phone. And try to give them a mental picture of you solving that problem.

For example. They ask can you type. Its because they need someone to type for them. If you answer, yep 50wpm. Then it answers the question, but its a bit academic, and they will probably dismiss it. But if you relate examples of times you typed, eg, I remember one day.. and I typed this and that.. and I completed it.. etc. etc. and give them an image of you, sitting at a desk typing, then it is far better.

And the real killer is at the end, if they ask if you have any questions. Its a golden opportunity to make sure they are imagining you actually doing the job, by asking a question along those lines. E.g. Suppose I've been working here for 6 months, what would you see me doing in a normal day? Cool eh, your saying, ok, imagine me, in your office, doing the job.. can you?... and if they do.. and they like that image... you've got a good chance.

When someone interviews for a job, they are picturing someone doing it. The interview, is your chance, to get your shiny beaming face, into that picture.

Don't brag, just inform. When you are in a interview be confident in the questions they ask. I look for confident people even if they are pulling the answers out of their butts.
