It's set kind of like a western and one of the gang leaders has a pistol and he's obsessed with it. The main character gets beat up by this huge, deformed samurai for helping the woman and her husband to escape. What's the name of that and who made it?

It is Yojimbo, one the best movies of all time. You should also check out Sanjuro(same character) in a prequel of sorts.
