I am considering buying a PC based navigational program. These look to be easier to operate than a conventional chart plotter. The down side would be that the interface with a radar and its ability to overlay information would not be available, or is it. Do you know different

A conventional chart plotter (dead easy to use) and a separate radar is by far your best bet. Especially since more and more countries insist on vessels having radars kind of establishes the fact that its safer.

Yes, there are combined radars with chartplotters available (big ships have them) but that is an expensive way to go.

I myself have a P.C. based navigational software programme that is very useful when I am in port planning a voyage but wouldn't use it to replace my on board standard G.P.S. system etc.

D`ont make these things more complicated than they need to be ! "Conventional" chart plotters are very easy to use. Observe the manufacturers warnings regarding limitations for navigation. Intrfaces between radar and plotter (overlays) are commonplace now (ARPA)

get the Garmin black box and use the computer to do your work and then use the Marine updater to up load your data and stay on top of your Plotter with ease,With the Garmin you can add a computer screen into the system if you want the larger screen,I just don't think you be happy with two dedicated systems not dedicated to each other
