This too depends on the area you live, but yes, put it up in a tree only high enough so you can fill it or any other kind of bird feeder as long as you only put bird feed in it, you should never have rats.

I feed the birds and all wild life gets a little of it thats just a part of it you can't really pick and choose. They are all answering to use certain types of feeders but there is always what falls to the ground and other things are still attracted so its either feed everything or nothing. A lot of the birds will scare off other wild life.

Put cayenne pepper flakes in with the bird seed. Animals hate pepper;. This works for squirrels too.
Keep your bird seed in large plastic containers with good tight lids to keep the rats and mice out.

Possibly, if you can hang it from a tree, where rats cant go.
I don't think that rats can climb trees. I THINK. I've seen one climbing a wall!

But, I've NEVER seen a RAT (other than the furry rat kind, the squirrell) TRY to get in a bird feeder that was hanging from a tree.

I have been feeding the birds for years and have never had rats in my yard.

I have bird feeders, and attatch those suet blocks in they grated case to the fence.

Both inexpensive and effective.

Hang them a little net bag of feed to peck at with a perch below the bag to stop bits of food falling to the ground.
