I would go with the whole group thing. Learn one group at a time. The reason: groups all have the same property and are sometimes given a group name (halogens, noble gases, alki earth metals, etc). Also, they have the same properties and similar electron structures. The easiest way to memorize the periodic table is to take a blank one and practice filing it in. Mind you, you will have to do this many times. Start of by looking at the periodic table as you do it. Once you have a grasp on it, cover it up and fill in what you can, peek if you have to. Keep doing this until you no longer have to look.

Do you really need to memorize it? I have a degree in chemistry and have worked as a chemist for 19 years and have never memorized it. I once had to draw the periodic table and put the numbers in it up to 100 but didn't have to know the elements. I would say that unless you are assigned to memorize the periodic table, memorizing it is a complete waste of time.

You memorize one family at a time, everyday. For example you try memorizing Family I-A on Monday, then the ff day review what you learned the day before and start memorizing II-A. That's all I can advise.

I suggest you memorise a Group at a time. I did it that way and I know most of the elements in the periodic table!

A student once asked Albert Einstein how many feet are in a mile. Dr. Einstein didn't know. The student expressed surprise that one of the greatest mathematicians who ever lived wouldn't know such a simple fact. Dr. Einstein replied, "I decided early in my career not to clutter my mind with facts that I can look up in two minutes". :-)
