um... actually reading the chapters maybe?

No but seriously, either take shorthand notes on important events and people or highlight them if you can in your book. Though personally I detest defacing books, this method helps people focus.

And always keep these simple questions in mind in order to get the basic facts:

What Happened?
Who did it or Who was involved?
How did it happen?
Why did it Happen?
What was the result/impact?

From Example:
What happened?
Event: 1066 Battle Of Hastings

Who was involved?
Anglo-saxons and Normans

Why did it happened?
It was a fight over the english crown that had been promised to the Norman Leader William.

What was the result/impact?
The Normans won and took over England altering it's destiny and language.

Read the chapters. Take notes. Make flash cards and practice with them. Mneumonics might help, like Never Eat Soggy Wheaties, to remember North, East, South and West, or my very energetic mother just served us noodles to remember the planets, Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune (I even remembered to exclude Pluto, take that Dwarf Planet.)

Really there is no trick to make learning anything simple. People have different aptitudes and interests for different subjects. The key is to find what works for you and put in the effort you need to succeed.

The above answers are very good tips.
However, I'd like to add that there is usually a timeline of the events covered in each chapter at the end (of each chapter), so that may help you get things in chronological order in your mind. Also, look review any notes you may have taken in class (notes are always a good idea).

Easy what a joke. Read it and remember it. That is the way it has been done for years. Pull the ipod out, sign off the computer and do a little work. Work is in the dictionary. Look it up.
