The guy knew what he was doing. The stingrays barb is covered in a deadly venomous mucus, he had no choice but to risk pulling it out to have any chance of survival, at least that way the blood could cleanse out some of the poison. Im so sick of people on here assuming that he caused his own death by pulling out the barb!

It a terrible tradgedy and I dont understand why people speculate about it without researching the facts as much as possible. Ive read a few comments on here stating that he would have survived if he didnt pull out the barb but thats not the case.

In his particular case, he had absolutely no way of knowing that barb was lodged in his heart. Anyone in his shoes, knowing that the barb is poisonous would've pulled it out.
There's a rule though to having been stabbed in the heart. A few years ago a approx 6-7 yr old kid in Wyoming was running around the house with a pencil in his hand. He fell on it. When he got up , it was lodged in his heart. His mother was a nurse. She saw this & when he went to pull it out, she stopped him, she saw that it was moving to the rythem of his heart beat. She put him in the car & drove the 15-20 mins to the hospital. They were able to take the pencil out & the boy was fine. His mom saved his life because she knew that he would've bled out had they removed that pencil (it basically acted as a plug). When that story came out, there were a lot more stories that I read about also.
I think this is why people keep saying if he'd have left it it, it would have 'plugged' the hole that it made & he would've lived.
I'm not sure what to think really, I'm just so sad over it.

As far as I know (tho no-one ever had been stung in the heart before) the poison on the barb only once killed a human being before Steve Irwin got killed.

So leaving the barb in the heart would maybe have been a better option, cuz that way the hole in the hart (caused by the sting) would have stayed "shut" cuz the sting worked as a cork, preventing the heart from bleeding.
Once the sting was pulled out, the heart started bleeding, filling up the sack around the heart, and also leaking in the chest-cavity uncontrolaby, causing his death.

Had the sting stayed in until they had opened his chest (in hospital, of course), and were ready to immidiately close the hole after the sting came out, MAYBE he would have survived.

I agree, it's one of those things that you could never been 100% sure on.

Would he have survived had he left the barb in? No probably not because of the poison that is on it, and yes I know that the barb causes the most damage (cut wise not poison wise) being pulled out than going in, but I don't think he really had a choice.

R.I.P Stevo, I felt so sorry watch Terri and the kids on tv this morning :(

They should let the good bloke rest in peace he didn't know if the stingray was going to be hostile or threatened.People should remember him for what he thought was best for wildlife and not making a scene of it.Steve died what he loved doing enjoying and perserving nature's creatures besides he had no other choice and he knew this could be his last adventure.

People are ignorant and don't understand anything about the situation.. they weren't there, how do they know what happened? If they truly believe everything they here then so be it. Not everyone is an expert in the animal feild so I don't see how they could possibly, for the slightest moment, think to criticize that sort of situation!

It is all so sad and unfortunate...

When any person assumes they will invariably be wrong.
The fact is he pulled out the barb and that would have let his blood presser drop very fast.
That would cause him to black out.with so fast a blood loss it would be only two minutes before he pass away,
Caused by the lack of oxygen to the brain.
I do not know of any venom that can work that fast.

Yeah his death sucks. He would have died either way I reckon. Apparently pulling it out would have been the equivalent to pulling out an arrow. Besides, it would have been heat of the moment, so I doubt he would be thinking about the possibilities of what may or may not happen if he pulled it out.

Since I don;t know what damage the barb did to the heart itself (regardless of the poison), I think he did the right move.

Quite frankly I have not heard this statement before and I have read heaps about Steve...I live in Australia and I think this is the biggest croc I have ever heard.
For him pulling it out , it was due to instinct.

What can I say? There are clueless people in this world that give personal opinions without any actual fact. I watch some reruns of his television show and get really sad that he is no longer with us.
