The Iranian government censors information 1) because they do not want people to have individual thought. The leaders of this country are religious leaders and everything that they say "is done becasue Allah says so." 2) The government is afraid of people who are free thinkers. You are told to go to church at a specific time, must pray 5 times a day, can't have sex, listen to music, dance, drink, etc. If you don't you are considered a rebel or an infidel and either punished or killed. 3) The government controls access to information. Yahoo, google, and other web sites are simply blocked and you cannot view them. Satellite TV and radio are the only things they cannot control. That is why if you are found with them, off with your head.

Basically what the leaders of Iran want is people to be robots for the state.
