Just the mobility. That's it.
I personally don't like having a laptop as a MAIN computer. I have both a laptop and a desktop and I do most of my work with my desktop.

Laptops were created for the purpose of mobility but many people buy a laptop as their main computer. There are way more disadvantages of having a laptop, over a desktop. It seems strange to me that people would want to spend more money for a laptop, with all of it's disadvantages.
Some disadvantages? Well, the keyboard is cramped and doesn't compare to even a cheap desktop keyboard, the mouse pad thing sucks, the hard drive runs in slow motion, the display sucks, it costs more to upgrade, and it is limited in it's ability to be upgraded. Also, when the laptop crashes, you don't have to bother with removing and then re-inserting the battery because the stupid laptop doesn't have a RESET key or master on/off switch.

I am a graduate student, I love my laptop. sometimes I don't feel like sitting in the home office at the desktop. I can take my lap top to my bedroom plop a pillow on my lap and research away. I can also grab my lap top put it in my bag and when I'm traveling (as long as the hotel or other place that i am visiting has a wireless connection) I can still do my homework, respond to emails, etc.

Some professions demand that you have a laptop.

You don't have to travel by car to transport your laptop....your PC on the other hand is going to be a real encumbrance on the commute.
