The thingis that the cartoons of old (20 or more) had characters dong things like falling off of cliffs, running through tunnels painted on mountains, and many other impossible things that while those of us that grew up with them did and do still find absolutely hilarious, too many people now are concerned with "immitatibility). Personally I grew up watching Superfriends, Scooby Doo, Bugs Bunny and I never once though abut trying todo any of the stuff I saw the characters do, neither did anyone i grew up with (accept that one kid whos' parents dropped him on his head one to many times). But now someone decided that the shows have to be done in such a way that the actions can't be easily repeated and so they ahve gone over the top with blood and gore that most younger audiences coud not have any hope of duplicating. Plus there is this idea that if you don't show that shooting someone will kill them instead of just covering them with soot and blowing their hair backwards was somehow irresponsible. That you HAVE to show how much of a persons head wil get blown off by a shotgun or ti will encourage kids to get a shotgun and shoot someone. Its ridiculous. They eiter go overboard with the blood and gore, or make the acts so outrageous that the entertainment value of the show is lost in thename of "social responsiblity". It's like the rating system and disclaimers. If they had any idea how many MORE peole watch those shows that probably shouldn't because of those warnings...but no...they probably wouldn't care. And parental blocks? Please I have friends who'se 8 year old has figured out every code they have tried to use. And what's the point? All the kids have to do is find someone who'se parents don't use those blocks and the kids can watch stuff there.
And I agree that most of the cartoons today are not fit for small children. They are either too bloody and violent for them or are so patronizing that parents should be offended that the makers of them treat children under five or six like complete morons.
We need entertainment in cartoons, not realism. We have realitytelevisin if you want realizm. Cartoons are supposed to make you laugh, or tell a story without having to resort to blood gore and sex. Not that I have anything against any of those things. I enjoy a good slasher movie, or horror film. But when i watch a cartoon, I want to laugh, or be entertained. We need more things like Woody Woodpecker, Tom & Jerry and Superfriends. Not this pseudo-noir graphic clusterf...well you get the point.
So yeah, I do feel the same way...

Despite the fact that I grew up with and still love the old cartoons a lot of them are not "Politically Correct".
In the 70's when I was still a kid (Okay, A little kid as opposed to the full grown one I am now) I used to see Bugs Bunny cartoons and would notice that they sometimes had little "jumps" in the action. At the time I thought it was because the tapes were old and they had to be spliced but when I got older I found unedited versions (and even banned versions on dvd) of those cartoons. A lot of what was cut involved ethnic slurs and racial stereo-typing particularly among the WW2 era cartoons like Orientals with Huge buckteeth and oversized glasses who say "Prrease?" instead of "Please?", Charactors in blackface with Huge red lips, Germans being portrayed as Nazi's, etc.
Also some of the things kids did in the cartoons (i.e. - kids using slingshots, bows & arrows, knives, guns, etc.) are not acceptable by todays standards.
I do buy box sets and let my son watch Scooby Doo, Wacky Races, Gigantor and Speed Racer among others but some cartoons I keep in the closet and wait for the day he is old enough to see them and understand them for what they are and the context of the time they were created in.
Incidentally, did you know Steven Spielberg a few years ago re-edited "E.T." so that the Hunters and Cops running to the landing site were all carrying flashlights instead of guns? Just to make it "PC" for future generations.

when I was growing up Bugs Bunny, Tom and Jerry, the Road Runner etc, was all that was available.
I never once thought that I could hit someone in the head with a brick and everything would be OK, I knew that the things cartoon characters did I couldn't get away with. However I did learn from Bugs Bunny that I don't have to let anyone pick on me. to stand up for myself even if the other guy is 10 times bigger than me and that it can be better to out smart the other guy instead of fighting them.

You're right. Cartoons aren't really fun anymore. I recently watched a Saturday morning cartoon block with my new niece (she was just born recently), and then I had her watch some of the cartoons I grew up with on "Boomerang" (Magilla Gorilla, Atom Ant, Quick Draw McGraw, Pink Panther, etc.) - I think my generation's cartoons (mid-'60's to early '70's) are superior - they were just plain funny and entertaining - we did not watch them to get a moral message or to learn anything - that's what schools and parents were for! Besides, I think us kids then instinctively knew that you could not attempt to fly like Superman or get hit with an anvil like Wile E. Coyote and walk away from it.
Most of today's cartoons are crap - all they are today are either 30-minute toy commercials or shows where you're supposed to get a 'message' out of it or shows with more fighting and beat-em-up stuff than even Bugs Bunny had to deal with in his entire career!
Plain and simple - nothing in life is fun any more, not even cartoons. People today take EVERYTHING seriously. One man's fun is a hypersensitive man's insult, and the hypersensitive ones are the ones who win out at the end of the day because they either have stronger numbers or more clout.

I think it's becasue the cartoons of our day didn't have enough graphic bloodletting and realistic fighting for cartoon viewers today. Anvils are completely unwarranted! Too gratuitous! Now, kick someone in the face with your boot and at least that has a purpose.
I need a rolly-eye icon.

I was floored just the other day when one of my daughters told me that Tom and Jerry and Roadrunner were too violent for her kids to watch........
I told her she used to watch them and Thundercats and He-Man and she never tried to catch a bird using an Acme rocket. She used to hold a plastic sword over her head and yell "I have the power" but she never killed anyone with it. She still won't let her kids watch the old cartoons.
I think some people just take things too far.

Most people forgot that great cartoons like 'Flintstones' and 'Looney Tunes' were originally aimed at adult audiences, and placed in prime time.
These cartoons showed racial specifics, cigarette and other drug related uses, and other types of things (sexual) which can be seen today by children who aren't 'mature' enough to watch are enjoying, and it's driving the parents nuts!
And the parents cant deal with it.

I agree! most tv entertainment has become worse and worse. back in the old days we all watched the Three Stooges poke each other in the eyes and hit each other over the head with hammers. They were real people, not toons, and they didn't prompt us to violence...! In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it should prove that we are getting more violent because we have less of a humorous outlet for our violent tendencies, so they build up and are expressed in reality instead of in comedy.

I used to watch "He-man", "Thundercats", "Voltron", and "GI Joe" all the time when i was younger (Watch these shows they are pretty violent, even if no one dies). And after 24 years i STILL haven't killed anyone or broken any major laws....
but on to your question: Old cartoons are "bad" because many of them had "morals" and "lessons" at the end. People are afraid that these "forms of entertainment" can teach thier children better then they can.
that is my opinion, at least
