A bistro is a restaurant, but a restaurant is not necessarily a bistro. Bistros usually have French fare, and usually (depending on your climate) outdoor patio seating. Restaurants can be anything from McD's to the French Laundry. Bistros are usually smaller with a more relaxed feel than Thomas Keller's restaurants.
