my husband's computer was purchased about 2 years ago from a guy that built it himself, so, we have no way to look up the company name, etc. we reinstalled the operating system (windows xp) last night and cannot connect to the interenet thouugh our verizon dsl. it seems as though we don't have any drivers, especially the ethernet driver which the verizon tech support told us was the problem with connecting. i found on this site a link to free driver downloads, but there are thousands, and not sure what we need.

If the network board is separate, then open the box and LOOK. If you do not see a brand on the board itself, then look at the chip. Quite often, you will find a driver for network cards by that brand and number on that chip.

If your network board is not separate, then you will have to look for a typical network chip on the motherboard. Look for Realtek, Netgear and other popular brands.

The other alternative is to BUY a new network card. This might only cost about $15 and it will come with a driver.

Is the network card built into the computer motherboard? If so, you can open up your computer and look for the motherboard manufacturer's name and the motherboard's model number. Use a friend's computer to go to the manufacturer's website and download the driver.

If you have a PCI network card, and there's no name or anything written on the card, you can always buy a new one. A new PCI network card costs as little as ($8 CDN), as long as you don't go to a department store. But I guess you live in the U.S., so the price will be cheaper anyway.

NEW ---------------
1394 is a Firewire card. Firewire is a peripheral interface, sort of like USB.
Firewire drivers sometimes show up as network drivers because you can use Firewire to connect between 2 computers in a network.
Also, some PCI cards have a combination Ethernet network and Firewire interface on them.

In your case, you'll probably have to buy and install an Ethernet PCI network card if you can't identify the manufacturer.

Follow this route:

Click on "Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware > Device Manager > Network Adapters"

You will get your answer there. Then based on the make of your ethernet card, find out driver for it.

> Right-click 'My Computer'
> Select 'Manage'
> Click 'Device Manager' on left
> Double-click 'Network Adapters' to see list of installed devices
> Right-click and select 'Properties' of device
> Enable device, if it is not already

Note
If the device is enabled, check to see if a question mark, or exclamation point is next to the name of the network adapter.

If there is not any marks, then you do not need another driver, because the driver you are currently using is compatable.

However, if there are marks, then try re-installing device driver.
You can do that by, clicking 'Driver' tab and then click on 'Update Driver' button. Then let computer find the driver, it wants.
