The American Dream is the thought that in the United States of America, hard work and determination can lead to a better life, usually through economic success. These were values held by many early European settlers, and have been passed on to the newer generations.Settlement in the new world provided them with hope for egalitarianism.
Throughout the 19th century, immigrants fled the monarchies of Western Europe and their post-feudal economies, which actively oppressed the peasant class. These economic systems required high levels of taxation, which stymied development. The American economy, however, was built up by people who were consciously free of these constraints.
Some consider the American dream to be having two children and living in a suburban house with financial security and 2 car garage. Currently this iconic middle class lifestyle is lived by a sizable minority.
The American Dream has been criticised for its emphasis on material possessions as a way of finding happiness.
...But, how can Britishers, who have chosen to live under a Monarchy, ever have any such dreams ?

No. It was always you immigrants and American wannabes that had the dream. Not us. We sent you the dream to get you over here to provide our booming economy with cheap unskilled labor to do all the crappy jobs we wouldn't do.
