Above answers are right on target. I have gone to live Auctions and they are fun, but, some people really get into this Bidding game. I not sure if it like an Ego; "I out bid you"! or a Desire: "I really wanted this at any cost"! But, that the basic analogy. Heck, another thing many not consider when bidding on Ebay is the shipping. Pay $5 for something and $10 for shipping. As you were saying, they probably could have gone local and bought it for $8. But, for some reason many people never consider shipping, all they know is it sells for $8 at Wal-Wort and they bought it for $5 on Ebay.
I just did a quick search and Toys-o-Bust have them $40 not sure of the shipping. They have a Barbie and TMX Elmo for $20 with free shipping! Barbie always gets favoritism, now the price it may be smaller Elmo.

well the reason people pay so much is because they know that walmart will eventually run out and the holliday season is coming. Its all about supply and demand, and the demand is extremely high.... Go to any store in about a month or even now and try to find one. I bought all 3 of mine at walmart and i plan on selling 2 of them right after thankgiving. Did you know that this toy will be on every wish list this year, even on adult lists also. I can easily see it selling for around $300-350 like a week before christmas. Remember that kind of money to some people is pocketchange, plus they dont have drive all over the world looking for it??

Yeah, but try to go to Walmart and get it. Sears is already sold out and it just arrived - what - yesterday? It's gonna be another one of those things where people pay WAY too much money for a x-mas gift rather than just wait until the hype is over.

I got it for $40 at Target yesterday.
Besides the fact that it is a great toy (even for grown-ups) I believe people leave their rational mode of thinking and start competing when they bid on eBay.
I think it is a psychological state in which what most matters is winning the battle but essentially ends up in loosing the war (or at least making a huge sacrifice).

I observed the Elmo TMX movies on the internet and that they are no longer something too specific. All Elmo does is snicker maniacally and fall over, come back up, and fall yet back once you touch it. My little brother loves Elmo yet i do no longer think of he's loopy approximately it. My mom needs me to get it for him for Christmas, so i think why no longer.

There are a couple of reasons:
1) Panic for fear of a shortage
2) Wanting to be the first to have it / exclusivity
3) Having too much money to know better
4) Having a spoiled *** child
Me, I'm saving some time and gas money why waiting it out.

Alot of WalMarts are sold out of it already.
I guess people want to ensure that they are able to get ahold of one before the holidays. It happens every year with the best seller toys.

I think they believe they can not get it anywhere else. It happened last year with XBox 360, they were paying a thousand or more for it. I guess they want to make sure their child gets this popular toy.

Some people just like to bid on stuff, it seems silly, but it's a hobby or an addiction, whatever reason, I agree, go to Wally World and buy it!
