Some coliforms can cause disease, and it also serves as an indicator of fecal contamination.

Another bacteria that can be (and is, some times) used for a sign of contamination is Clostridium perfringens.

Yeah, DaveBurke got it right; coliform is so much more easily tested-for, and is therefore a "bellweather" for other more virulent pathogens which are usually present along with it. I got that from prof. Cheryl Wasserman at Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, fall 1992 semester.

I thought coliform bacteria was a pathogen.

coliform can be pathogenic, plus is the most common signal of sewage contamination, which would be the main provider of other more virulent pathogens.
