Because birds have hollow bones to make them light enough to fly and float on water, their feathers are hollow too.

THE REASON IS THAT THE BONES OF BIRDS ARE HOLLOW .HENCE THEY FLOAT AND MOREOVER THEY OCCUPY MORE AREA ON THE SURFACE OF WATER

Buoyancy. Same physics as boats. They weigh so little compared to the volume of their bodies, they don't displace much water. Ergo they float.
