My uncle gave me his trombone when I was about 4 years old and I kept checking it against my reach each year. My Junior High School accepted me into their music program (only because I had my own trombone!). About a year later I had my first "professional" gig; the annual Memorial Day Parade with the VFW band that paid (me) $2 and a free hot dog and bean dinner. I played a difficult unaccompanied classical trombone solo piece in front of our High School assembly ( by imagining that only my cousin in the front row was present in the room!). I went to Massachusetts All State concert band two years running (probably because there were fewer trombones and less competition than for trumpet or clarinet). During the first rehearsal my trombone broke in half and had to be resoldered. I was dance band leader in college (which included all the setup work each week) and did formations during football game half times (learned the same day). I have played in several pit orchestras for live plays, several marching bands and also a Big Band playing dance music. I have sung (lead and baritone) with a championship Barbershop Chorus. At age 35 I taught myself how to play chord piano and now enjoy playing from fake books (that include only the melody and chord symbols). Playing piano as a second instrument helps with any solo instrument because you get a better feel for chord structure and develop a better ear for music IMHO. Good luck with your keyboards, etc. etc.

I sing, so that is like a built in instrument. I have always loved music, and I have a good voice, so it was a natural fit! I am also learning to play bass guitar. Wish me luck!

I played the piano since I was 3 years old, played the clarinet and sax since I was in 5th grade and played the guitar since 10th grade. I love music so that's why I play musical instruments.

Clarinet, Bass clarinet, Saxophone. I started in middle school, wanted to play the flute so that I could learn some Jethro Tull tunes, but the teacher said I had fat fingers and the clarinet would be better for me. He lied, they had plenty of flute players, and I have been told that I have very long skinny fingers. He was a dick.

Guitar - acoustic and electric.
I learned to play it because I was given one, years ago, by someone who was leaving the country, and it was taking up so much space that I decided to learn how to play!
At first, I taught myself from a book of chord diagrams that didn't indicate correct fingering for chords (only little black circles on the frets, if you know what I mean). Six months later, someone walked by, saw me holding a first position G Major, and pointed out I was using the wrong three fingers to hold it : )

I play guitar. not well. a classical style guitar, because the strings are softer on my fingertips. I started because I did a 'storyhour for young listeners' at 3 little local libraries, with about 5-8 kids in attendance each week, each library. I had to keep 2 and 3 year olds amused for one hour each week. I got funding for some little musical instruments (shakers, little tom-tom drums, rhyhtm sticks, etc) My format was singing a little made up song with each kids name in it, then fingerplays, a story with visual props, a story with my guitar, a picture book, then the instrument case came out. I learned about 10 songs. like old mcdonald, the wheels on the bus, baby beluga, this land is your land. the guitar and instruments made such a HUGE difference in my program, it also gave the little ones musical exposure and inclusion. I always encouraged them to play to the beat, a little louder, a little softer. (after music, we'd make a craft together. all stories, music and craft was related to the theme of the week, like 'trains' or "on the farm"..
After I learned several songs, I'd bring my guitar on the 2 or 3 summer camping trips I'd take my young sons on (hubby hated camping). THEY said their fav. part of camping was the fire at night with mom singing camping songs. sometimes we'd invite other campers nearby to join us.
NOW my youngest is 8, and he was always plucking out songs on my guitar. So I bought him a fernandez mini travel electric guitar (meant to use on the tour bus I suppose)(perfect size for a child, built in amp, and half price!) and now HE is making up songs... Music seems to be the gift that keeps on giving, thanks for the great question!
