Film Noirs were popular, gangster films in which James Cagney was the best back then.. in my opinion.. try some of his films :)
ooh also "Lady Eve" which was 1941.... its a comedy.. a GREAT comedy very modernish too... Henry Fonda is the main character, Barbara Stanwyck....
