Some of the best movies ever made - Casablanca, Maltese Falcon, to name a few. Other great movies of that period are Gone with the Wind, Wizard of Oz, The Third Man, Citizen Kane....

Film Noirs were popular, gangster films in which James Cagney was the best back then.. in my opinion.. try some of his films :)
ooh also "Lady Eve" which was 1941.... its a comedy.. a GREAT comedy very modernish too... Henry Fonda is the main character, Barbara Stanwyck....

Movies with good plots, great dialogue, suspense & thrills based on what wasn't there, rather than the glut of special effects movies of late.
