My favorite two-player game has to be Memoir 44.
In addition, I really enjoy Jambo, Tally Ho, Roma, Ta Yu, and Streetsoccer.
Many of these games are not mainstream games that you'll find at Walmart or Target. If you want to look into them some more, I suggest browsing around at:

Great places for buying these games are:

In my opinion, Cribbage is the best. It makes you think and you have to have a certain strategy. Depending on how often you play, you can tell how the other player starts playing. If you're bad in math, it's a great way to get better!

If you need to download GNU Backgammon you can get it here for free: http://bitly.com/1pUEbjB
it's completely free and it's very fast to install
GNU Backgammon is a version of the popular board game, which you can play directly on your computer. Several different games can be played against the computer, which has a powerful intelligence engine.
It's a really nice game.

Definately backgammon in my opinon. My dad always said it was the game of life. Some of what you get rolled is luck, but you will always have to move with what you have.
Live, learn, enjoy :)
