Toshiba is the BEST. HPs are OK if you can't find a Toshiba model that you like. Dells SUCK. I have found that keyboards and mousepads were lose, so just touching the keyboards, causes the mouse to move. (not always, but it is NOT REPAIRABLE when you get one like that).
In general, I believe that you have to SEE the laptop when you buy one. Check Staples, WalMart and Costco for Toshiba first. Shop at a store that offers a FREE RETURN policy. If you get your new laptop home and it's BROKEN, you want to be able to take it back without hassles.

I'm answering this on a Dell Latitude. Dell have been having a lot of problems lately, and the result is that you can get quality for not so much money. Think hard about what is important for use at uni, and what is just extra, and make sure you aren't paying for something you won't be needing. For instance, I save a lot because I don't play games on the computer very much. I don't need all the fancy graphics animation packages. But I made sure I have the best possible configuration for online communication, because that is almost all I do with a computer.

I bought an Acer from Tesco a couple of weeks back. Just under 400 quid and seems to have everything, even comes ready for wireless internet.
My friends sister just bought one for uni as well.
Good value, decent size and weight and best of all, it's from Tesco so get a clubcard and then you'll get vouchers to use for your shopping :-)
If you want a full spec on it or to know what it does drop me an e-mail and I'll let you know all the jargon (cujobiker@yahoo.co.uk).
Hope that helps
