If you have the 'older' type mouse with the little ball that rolls around on the bottom, it will need cleaning, and will probably need replacing after a few years. If you have the newer, and pretty much standard red light 'LED' optical type mouse, it should last much longer. Usually until one of the buttons on the top wear out!!

you didnt say what kind of mouse you have you can clean the ball on the bottom of your mouse by taking it out also look inside for dust and lint clean with air or a duster dont wash!!the mouse will have a ring that holds the ball in it comes off by unscrewing find the dots on the bottom and turn it.if you are going to buy a new mouse anyway get an optical one mine is ten years old and just needs batteries once in a while, they are in expensive and no mechanical parts to fail.

It could be worn, but it is probably just dirty. Open the bottom, take out the ball, clean the junk off the rollers and blow it out with some air.
See if that works. If you do have to get a new one, get an optical one. They don't have a ball and don't have that problem.
