Good answers here. A couple more good sites for info:

www.tsracing.com lists kart tracks by state

www.gokartracing.com is an excellent place with tons of info for the newbie.

Find your local track, go to a race, and say "I'm thinking about getting into this" and you'll get more info than you can possibly remember. Karting is an absolute blast and a great family sport. If you happen to be in or near Ohio, check out our club site at www.ovka.com and come watch us race. But hurry----the season is ending next week!!

Go to the World Karting Association website and the Stars of Tomorrow website. Also, find a local track, you don't say where you live, and talk to the people working in the kart shop. There are also some kart shops that aren't located at tracks, in my area west of Chicago we have Viking Racing Products. You will need: money, a kart, helmet, protective clothing-at least a heavy leather jacket if not a driver's suit, money, spare tires, tools-because you are the one who will be fixing the kart, a way to get the kart to the track, and money. That's the short list, karting is a blast and worth every penny that you ever spend on it, good luck!

Yeah, what he said. Find a track you can run on close to home, if there is one, and see what people are running. Many people sell off stuff pretty cheap at the end of the racing season. There are a few kart racing sanctioning bodies but the two most popular ones are the World Karting Association (WKA) and the International Karting Federation (IKF).

If you're living with your parents, get them to help you.

Help from parents is an important part of developing a racing career these days. Ask Jeff Gordon, Denny Hamlin, Danica Patrick, etc. They wouldn't be where they are except for their parents help. Serious, bigtime help.
