Thanks,,but another question..can something be added to the styrofoam to enhance strenght?
I know that surfboards use styrofoam as a core with the outer layers being fiberglass but am trying to keep from the added weight. Any info would be much appreciated....

Okay, I read your previous question... you want to use Styrofoam for water recreation. What type of "recreation" ? Styrofoam is used primarily for it's floatation properties

Regarding surfboards, long ago (I'm old and out of date) they used to route a groove down the middle of the board and use a light WOOD (bass-wood or balsa) to provide additional longitudinal strength... like a girder or beam.

Fiberglass applied correctly provides incredible strength for its weight. It all depends on the fiber clothe used (weave & warp) and the amount of resin applied.

Good luck and wear a life jacket

Cement -Smile-...oh yeah the weight issue. You would need to find some type of glue that binds but is not weighty. I have used glue on Styrofoam to keep is from wearing down quickly. but on a surfboard....what about the material that is used on airplane wings...it's a linen cloth that uses a bonding material to make it stiff. Sorry about not knowing the details but maybe someone can add to these concepts.

what about plastic ..lighter than fiber glass......or you could put on a thin coat of plaster depending on what you are using it for
