Moved into a house with a very shallow 12' x 5' pond (almost dries up if it doesn't rain in a week), with a liner topped by basic stone (about 1" diameter "river rock" type stuff). It does have a very basic "pump/waterfall" but thats it. What steps or process would I need to undertake to convert into something suitable for fish, turtles etc.? I would like to do this as inexpensively as possible. I live in Indiana and already have some sliders, crawdads, minnows etc. in a 125 gallon tank...

1. Make it deeper in some place- it should be at least 100 gallons- the bigger the better.

2. Fence it to prevent escapes.

3. Find a way to cover it or protect it from predators like raccoons or hawks.

4. Include a hibernation site/beach

The size is the main limiting issue, and probably the most expensive 'repair'.

You will have to have a filtration system made for that size pond...you will have to clean it on a regular basis(filter) do to the turtles...make sure the water temp. is the same as what they are in already...the sliders you will have to bring inside during winter unless you put a heater in the pond...which would be a great ideal...

you will need to dig out one end at least and make a deeper pond
if you want to keep fish and it needs to be deep enough so that it won't freeze solid in the winter

if its shallow check out mud or musk turtles... they do well in shallow water and stay relitivly small compaired to red ear sliders.
