in show terms the classes are divided up into two types. the first being judged on the rider only (equitation or horsemanship) the other being judged solely on the horse (pleasure). a pleasure class is meant to bring out the best qualities of the horses gaits. In western pleasure it is a slower pace than English pleasure. in the western pleasure class, the horses head should be level with his withers, possibly slightly above dep[ending on the breed being shown. the walk should should a long flowing stride, something that doesnt drag along and isnt a slow poke. the jog (trot) should be nice and comfortable and move along the ground at an even pace. the rider should not be bouncing. If the horse has a jarry jog then the rider needs to learn to counteract that so that s/he doesnt look like it is jarry. the canter should be smooth and comfortable and should be slow enoguh to show that the horse is undercontrol, not looking like he is going to take off for the races.

In english pleasure, the walk should be long and flowing. the trot should be an even paced trot, one that covers the ground well and the overall appearnce is that the horse has a very floaty trot. the canter should be a stride of 12' long, groundcovering, and beautiful to watch. the pleasure class is a simulation of coming home from a Hunt and the judge wants to see something that is faster than a western pleasure horse. the thought is that it is late after a hunt and the judge wants to get home.

in every day terms, pleasure riding is no showing involved, no lessons. taking your horse out of the barn and going trail riding. that kind of stuff.

You can either be a pleasure rider or a show rider, however most people do both and fall in the middle. Pleasure riders are with horses for the joys of riding on trails or the satisfaction of working toward a goal and attaining it through training. A show rider trains their horse and themselves to perfection for the purpose of a $.05 ribbon, however the value of that ribbon represents all the hard work and sweat you and your horse put in to get there.

For the uneducated few who responded in a sexual manner, I've been riding for over 11 years, actually 12 at this point, and I've never had a sexual experience in the saddle. Grow up.
