I'm a new guppy owner. And I have a pregnant guppy, seems near to giving birth, who stays near the surface in a separate tank. In fact it seems like part of the top body is exposed to air. I just noticed within the last half hour, that the scales in that area fell off and I can see her flesh. What I am wondering, is it the atmosphere that's causing the scale to fall off or a disease? The only change I see are two small fleshy round spots on the mid part of her top body, which looks like the area exposed to air. Thanks.

Sounds like ich which should be treated with a salt bath of one teaspoon of salt in a gallon of water for half an hour. Add the salt at one tablespoon for every 5 gallons of tank water to your tank. It should be salt for freshwater aquariums and it will kill the ich, protect your other guppies from getting it and promote healing.
Her floating at the top of the water could be a temperature problem, check your heater to make sure it is working and check to see that the water at the top of the tank is the same temp as the bottom of the tank. You may need to add another air stone to increase the circulation. It could also be swim bladder disease. If so feed the inside of a thawed frozen pea to your guppies (feed them it once a week as a precaution - it is good for them)

These scales will grow back. There is nothing like a virus that your fish has but it could be from not changing your water regularly, checking the PH level and checking the chlorine level in the water. Guppy poop alot so it is very important that you are cleaning out the tank if its 10 gl or smaller once a week. And you dont have to be doing a full water change but the best thing to do is get a turkey baster and suck up the stuff on the bottom with that.

If the fishes fins start to look damaged and liek they are torn and tattered then the fish may be developig fin rot.
Fin rot is one of the most common, and most preventable, diseases in aquarium fish. It is caused by several types of bacteria, and often occurs concurrently with other diseases. It can usually be cured, but if left untreated, it can kill the diseased fish and infect all the others in the tank. If it gets to this point than you know its the water or bacteria. But for right now keep up with the water changes and see if that helps your fish.

The fish cannot be exposed to air while in the tank unless the fish comes up to the surface and gets air. The air dries out the scales and they loose their natural slime which will also cause them to die and fall off

Ick???? Folks it's not ich (aka ick) Ich is small white spots. It doesn't cause scales to fall off. (Note that loss of scales is generally the result of injury, and if the fish is healthy they just grow back.) This sounds more like a swim bladder disorder and/or dropsy. Few fish put any part of themselves willingly out of the water for more than second or 2. The loss of scales, and bumps may the result of exposure to the air, or a bacterial infection.

You might try treatment with a broad spectrum antibotic (Marcyn I&II, trisulfa, or anything targeting both gram neg, and positive bacteria), or the combination of melafix, and primafix. There are a handful of product intended to be applied directly to wounds, but they are hard to apply.

The guppy could have become anemic as a result of its pregnancy. Make sure that their food is vitamin enriched and you can also add vitamin drops to the water.

properly, the scales ought to be falling off via rigidity. And confident, in case you upload approximately one teaspoonof aquarium salt for each 5 gallons, it is going to artwork purely superb and it won't effect your different fish :)
