If you are the dealer and thus the holder of the the crib hand you will score two points for the jack when it is the turn up card. This is called two for his heels .If you hold a jack in your hand and a card of the same suit as that jack turns up the you receive one point or one for his knob.
Jack was well known about 1542 to about 1567 for being quite quick thus the many expressions "jack be nimble jack be quick jack jumped over the candlestick" came into being at the same time. It is sort of folklore that jack once challenged the fastest runner in the next town and as a handicap to induce that runner to race jack wore ladies heels. Jack won of course and the prize of two calves was awarded to him thus the expression two for his heels developed in cribbage circles.
This next paragraph is just my interpretation of "one for his nob" . jack with the fame he was enjoying at the time became over bearing or "cocky"with himself and thus the expression of one for his nob would have developed as a slight or ridicule of his attitude

I always thought it had something to do with the devil. The Jack has represented the devil for a long time and that devil is also known as Spring Heeled Jack and there is the phrase to have the devil at your heels.

I've never heard of that expression. "one for his knob" is what my dad always says....maybe it's a different expression in different countries? It's only one point when you turn up a Jack, at least the rules we play. It's only one point if the jack in your hand matches the suit that's turned up as well...
Dunno. But I see we have a lot of crib players here (not).
