1st - how much is youro budget?
2nd - CAD needs memory ... you're looking at at least 1GB RAM
2 GB would be better...
3rd - Graphic card - need to be able to render graphic smoothly.. may be 256MB ram sitting in your graphic card..
4th - If ur budget allows, get a Core Dual processor ... bet. 2 - 3GHz
5th - HDD size should be relatively big... may be 100 to 200GB
6th - DVD writer, in case you need to burn your data out, alternatively get an external HDD for data backup.
All in, you should be looking at a relatively high-end laptop.
Pretty hard to recommend as there are a lot of combination out there and each individual has their preferences... so do some research and make comparison before you decide...
If you're no geek, then it will be safer to get a laptop from company that have a sound technical support team that may assist you when you're in trouble... Prefer if you extend your warranty to more than 2 yrs for technical support...
My understanding is Dell give such support pretty well, but don't quote me. Like I say, individual preferences count...
Hope the info helps
Regards

If you have enough money...either is an option. The real question is portability. Do you really need it? If so, I would go with a laptop. If you need a huge screen and that is a deciding factor...just buy a port/dock for the laptop at the main place you will be working so you have the convenience of a laptop and the luxury of a desktop...

...and the question is??? Sounds like you already know you want a laptop with a lot of RAM memory... Pretty much a commodity anymore, if you are "high maintenance" I would make sure you talk about support issues from whoever you buy it from up front, other than that, just get one you "like" (from a reasonably well known provider).

Mac's are best for multi-media capabilities. Try searching their site. Don't know if you can customize them yourself online. May want to call and tell a representitive exactly what you need it to do for you.

It depends on your budget. You can get a heck a lot more computer power if you get a desktop. $2,500 desktop can get you tons of power these days. That's your call.

Go to Dell.com and build one of each to price them. There are lots of options, you'll see.
