Does 'being educated' mean you absorbed enough knowledge to soak or drown people in it now, does it signify an ongoing process of seeking higher knowledge, does it mean you're capable of forming an opinion yet knowing full well nothing is ever as simple as words imply, is it having a diploma as relief in your pocket or on the wall, knowing you'll never have to work so hard again?

Whether you are educated or not, what do you think being educated is?

Being educated just means that you've gotten an education. It doesn't mean, however, that you know what to do with what you've learned. Too many 'educated' people just cruise around spouting big words, thinking that they're confusing the rest of us, because they've had more schooling than we have. Education should be a lifelong thing. You can learn new things at the bar, or at an orgy (although I wouldn't recommend majoring in those areas). When someone gets to the point that they think they've learned all they need to know, they become closed-minded, and, shortly after, ineffective.

In the social perspective, I think education is used as a measure by which we are regularly judged. We are generally judged as inefficient though, those lacking schooling are considered less intelligent, whilst those who have amassed information to their memory, in a chosen sphere, are often considered dull or lacking humanity. Qualifications on paper are only temporarily useful as a way to open doors to employment or yet more learning, once inside it becomes our life education which makes or breaks the deal.

The education of all our faculties cannot be taught by any scholar, it is printed in no text book and you cannot gain any recognizable qualifications, no matter how hard you study. The only positive outcome for such an education is a life well lived.

All forms of education are just a way of transferring experience into a recognizable format and to take away our fears that we lack the prior knowledge, be that in the shape of qualifications, a common sense approach to life or knowing how to love...

I feel as though I am "educated", even though I don't have a college degree (wish I did). For me, it's learning something new every day, being open to new ideas, not just that diploma on the wall. I know a lot of people who have degrees, but have no common sense whatsoever. Many feel that diploma makes them better than everyone else, which isn't true.

I consider myself educated. Although i have a BSc that doesnt normally help. Having a little knowledge about a broard range of subjects i think helps. And the old addage is true...the more you read the more you know....

for me, the term educated just doesn't mean in an academic sense, likewise going to school, college and university but in that we learn things through everyday life. people who share their knowledge and understanding and ideas and views with their fellow peers are educating them. so therefore, i don't believe that being educated and education itself starts and ends at school, college and university. far from it, we all learn something new in our lives and as life teaches us things we never knew in the first place. alas, having a piece of paper with your name on it saying you completed a degree or some other course is never enough.

its not just about assimulating knowledge and applying it, nor does it denote us in seeking higher knowledge. the purpose of education is it enables us to prepare ourselves for our future careers and lives and thus to instill that knowledge, the skills such as numerical and literacy-wise in a productive and meaningful way and so too that it benefits others. people without that education or of whom have been either deprived of it or because they choose not to opt for it are generally those who'd be at a disadvantage. then again, i also realise there are many intelligent people who decide not to pursue a college and/or university education for various reasons. eg, because of financial constraints and fears of getting into debt, as unlike school it is not deemed as a legal requirement to go onto further and higher education.

currently, i am at university studying media and journalism and about to enter my final year and despite of it being looked down upon by many people, i still enjoy learning about it. education is about learning and doing and i for one love learning about media and writing and discussing about it in the seminars.

Hmmm, interesting........ I think it is an on going thing. Now intelligence, and may I say I get the impression that you are of the intelligent variety, exactly how do you measure that?? Common sense? or education? which is most beneficial?

education doesn't always mean having gone to school..
anyway.

for me, being educated is recognizing that you are a person with dignity, and see others the same way.

in another sense, its that feeling of confidence in being self-reliant.
