This is another question that every-one answers with a 'no-chance' or 'every chance' without explaining the reason behind there answer.
The only two teams at present that have a chance of winning are Switzerland and Austria, as they are the only ones to qualify already. All the other teams have the same chance of lifting the trophy as England, because as yet none of them has qualified.
Who, (apart from the Greeks) would have given them a chance in the 2004 tournament. The where definately not the best team, but they had solidarity, and played as a team, rather than a team of individuals, and thats why they won. Good luck to them, but i cannot see them even qualifying this season.
As for England, well now that Beckham and his Dad Sven have gone, we can at last start to play to our potential. he only concern i have is whether the selection of Steve Mclaren was the right choice. Dont ask me for an alternative, cos i have not got one.
What England have is the belief they can win, thats a start. We seem to send the press into a feeding frenzy, and everyone will say its just a matter of turning up.
We all know thats not the case, but we do have fantastic players to select. Gerrard, Lampard, Hargreaves, Terry, A Cole, Rooney, would get a start in most European sides, but we do lack a Goal Keeper (sorry, Robinson is a flapper) and a strike partner for Rooney. Crouch has done well, but has scored against second rate teams, and Defoe flatters to decieve.
If we can sort out a keeper, striker and a left sided player, we could well have the players to lift the 2008 trophy.

We'll have a fair chance - probably a bit less of a one than Italy, about the same as Germany, France or Spain.

The team for 2008 will be different from the one in 2006 - and would be even if it contained the same 11 players, because they'll have different levels of experience, fitness and form.

Look back at recent major tournaments and we've not exactly been shamed - going out on penalties in 1996 (to the eventual winners), 1998, 2004 (to the losing finalists) and 2006. We lost to the winners in 2002 by the odd goal in three. The odd decision here or there in any of those matches and who knows what might have happened?

On average, you'll win 1 tournament in 8 where you get as far as the quarter-finals. We keep getting to that stage, and eventually we'll win one. But that's not to say it'll be 2008.

Personally I think very good (should we qualify). I am hoping that Terry Venables will have a big influence on affairs because his Euro 96 team was the last time England have played mobile, modern football.

We have the players, there is no doubt about that. If we concentrate on who we HAVE got rather than who we DON'T HAVE, the managers will elicit so much more from their squad.

What we need to do is keep possession better. You can only play 'sitting on a lead' football if you are as solid as rocks (you have players like Buffon, canavarro and Gatusso in your team). I think Owen Hargreaves will go a long way to solving that problem.

We have the creativity (Rooney, Gerrard, Lampard, Cole) and we have players with the necessary experience. We also now have a captain in the right area of the pitch. As a centre half, John Terry can step back, watch the game unfolding and then give instructions to other players. Gerrard and Beckham can't really do that because they have very involved technical jobs further up the pitch.

I do reckon we should persist with two strikers upfront. The 'lone ranger' formation doesn't suit any of our strikers with maybe the exception of Andy Johnson. Playing Rooney in this role is a sheer waste of attacking potency. Owen and Defoe are too short. Playing Peter Crouch here seems like a good idea, but he then needs another striker to play off the balls he wins. Against T&T in the World Cup, he was winning the long balls, but had no quick strike partner to pass them on to.

We need to sort out tactics and tempo in our game. In the World Cup (and a lot of qualifiers) we were fart-arsing around so often, when quick passes into the opposition half would have yielded many more goals and victories. My mate came up with a pretty damning summary when he said of the 1-0 win in Wales: " We tried our best NOT to win that didn't we? " The same went for the Ecuador game as well. No matter who the opposition, if you attack them you don't invite them onto you to create chances. That's why we didn't beat Brazil, France and twice Portugal. We were too busy doddering around when we should have added to our advantage. Go two-nil up and THEN maybe you can think about shutting up shop.

Finally, we need to work on the psychological side of things because England DO have hang ups about penalties, and about playing major nations. We have only KNOCKED OUT one major nation in a tournament, since we won the World Cup (and that was Spain in Euro 96, probably the unluckiest of the major nations). Self-belief that we can and will win penalties, and cross the Rubicon and beat our major rivals, will bring us trophies. The use of the sports psychologist in the coaching set up, will help a lot.

So my assessment is yes, we have a very good chance (possibly our best ever for a European Championship) but there is work to do between now and then.

I think things are looking up. What was Sven thinking? When he decided to take Theo, i thought okay he might b really good! But Sven bothered to tke him and didn't even play him when we needed a striker, what was that all about. He should have taken Defoe or some other striker.
Any way shouldn't dwell on the past, now McClaren has taken over things are looking up. After all he is English so it is in his hert to win.
I think it was a good move taking Beckham out, so to create a new Era,even though i feel sorry for him, perhaps he should still be in the squad. But i think he is getting too old now, he would be unlikely to feature in Euro2008 anyway beacuse he will be about 33?
I think Michael Carrick should feature in midfield and Lampard should be a super sub instead. Also King should come back now fit.

Ammmmm! Well, now to tell you honestly mate! Very low! England has got to change their manager or they are going downwards, I mean we all saw the game vs. Macedonia… English players won it luckily, Macedonia had the ball on theirs side all the time, while England scored a goal that was rather a work of luck then a real goal… I would like England to reach the finals mate, but let’s be realistic - they can’t follow the pace that the other countries make, anyway they got pretty trouble-free group so they’ll pass it most likely, but I can’t imagine them going all he way… sorry mate!

If England go into the euros with belief and passion and cut out silly mistakes then they can go all the way this is what lacked in the world cup.

I think that you are underestimating McClaren's chances of bringing some silverware back to our shores.
I think that the England team under McClaren's reign will flourish into one of the best we've seen.
I, personally, like his style. He is not picking the team because of the players worth, he is picking the team on talent.
If a player hasn't played in four or five weeks then he's going to have to work his balls off to get back in the team, also I don't think McClaren is going to send Jermaine Defoe home for a player who will not kick a football in the tournament.

With a bit of luck the Manager they have got now will want to win Euro 2008, Which is more than you can say about that idiot they used to have, all he was interested in was the money!

You just based that on '06? Go back to as far as the 1982 WC...Land of Eng will win noting until they change their mentality and (a) practise PKs and (b) learn skill (hello, Frank Lampard, the net is over here!).

Why even bother? The Land of Eng is hopeless at the sport it co-invented.

No chance especially with McClaren as manager. I think he is tactically naive and I have never thought of him as a good man manager. We shall just have to hope but history is against us. Except for 1966 we have never looked like winning a major tournament and nothing has changed
