I have had some blood tests and they have come back that my esr level is 26, i have been told it should be between 1 and 12. They tell me this means i have inflamation somewhere in my body, i broke my arm three years ago and have recently had the metalwork taken out and i am suffering pain. What symptoms will high esr show as. ie i am always tired is this a side effect of high esr?

An elevated esr can have many causes. It could be from having the metalwork taken out of your arm. Sometimes, an elevated esr can be triggered by anemia. One of the classic signs of anemia is being tired. I would talk to your doctor some more about the results and ask for a detailed explaination.

Hello there! I'm 21 and have inflammatry arthritis and have done since i was 11. Raised ESR levels indicate alot of inflammation in the body, which could be anything from anything simple like an infection or something for serious like arthritis! My ESR never falls below 50 and when i'm having a bad flare its been known to go well in to the hundreds!!! the higher it goes the less energy you have and you tend to feel like cr*p!! Which for me is most of the time. It might sound silly but do any of your toes ache? Or fingers? If so this can be the start of arthritis hence the high esr. I'd go back to your gp and ask for somemore tests to clarify any diagnosis just for your peace of mind. Hope this makes sence! X

ESR is a very non-specific test and can rise in a huge number of conditions and diseases, some of them as simple as infection, musculo-skeletal disorders, obesity, smoking, anaemia and use of certain drugs (such as oral contraceptives). Of course tuberculosis also causes ESR to rise, so does the cyst in the brain. Your total white cell count is also a little on the lower side. I suggest you get C-Reactive Protein (CRP) test done which is more specific.
